1 November marks 82 years since the death of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky – an outstanding hierarch of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, a spiritual guide of Ukrainians and a patron of culture and education.
In the Farewell Address delivered on 5 November 1944 during the Metropolitan’s funeral in Lviv, Patriarch Josyf (Slipyj) emphasised his exceptional role for the Church and the people.
«He was a great son of the Universal Catholic Church. A great Ukrainian, a scholar, an art expert, a humble man of prayer and a Metropolitan, the like of whom it is not easy to find not only in our history, but in general in the last century of our Church. In every field he was active in writing, in speech and in deed, literally until his last breath. In a word, he was the honour and adornment of our Church and our People» — Patriarch Josyf (Slipyj)
On the anniversary of the passing of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, the faithful remember him as a spiritual leader who, until his final days, worked for the strengthening of the Church and the Ukrainian people.
