The church is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Church of St. George in Drohobych is one of the oldest wooden churches in Galicia, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013. This temple remembers everything about Ukrainian traditions and history, because it was built more than five hundred years ago.
Now the Church of St. George is being restored. For 3 million hryvnias from the regional budget, foundations are being built here, the floor on the second floor, stairs are being replaced, beams are being restored, and shingles on the middle dome are being replaced. All with respect for authenticity, because the architecture of the 16th century must be preserved as much as possible in the temple. The work should be completed in two months.
According to Stepan Kulinyak, head of the Drohobytsk RVA, the iconostasis, which has been under reconstruction for a long time, is expected by the end of the year. It is important that even during the restoration, the church of St. George is open to tourists as a museum.
Also, the restoration of the bell tower of the wooden Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross should begin in the near future. This is another sacred building in Drohobych, which is an example of wooden architecture of the Ukrainian Renaissance. The executor of restoration works has already been selected through a tender procedure. For this year, 1 million hryvnias have been allocated from the regional budget.
