American woman spent six years homeless in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighbourhood due to drug addiction

An American woman named Yelley, known on TikTok under the handle @nightmaresinkensington, has described how her planned treatment for drug addiction fell through after a trip to the Kensington area of Philadelphia. Instead of going into rehab, she ended up on the streets and spent six years there.

She says that before this she had already been using drugs for a long time in her hometown, where “everything is expensive” and substances can only be bought through acquaintances. A friend suggested going to Philadelphia, saying drugs were supposedly cheaper and easier to get there. During the trip, the friend told her about Kensington which, according to Yelley, sounded “like Disneyland” for someone with an addiction.

Kensington, as the Philadelphia City Council acknowledges, has become “a hub of illegal drug trafficking”, including synthetic opioids. Yelley recalls that after her first trip she began making the three-hour journey each way every day to go back there for another “hit”.

When her family grew tired of her behaviour, she announced she was going into rehab. However, before starting treatment she secretly planned “one last weekend” in Philadelphia: she was going to sleep in the car, use drugs one more time and then go on to the clinic. But after three days in Kensington she changed her mind and decided to postpone treatment “for a little while”.

The short trip turned into a long spell of living on the streets. Her car was eventually stolen, leaving Yelley without a place to live. She admits she continued living “on the pavement” in Kensington while remaining dependent on drugs, and gradually “learnt all the ins and outs of homeless life”.

During the first winter she tried to go into rehab, but fell ill, hitchhiked back and ended up on the streets again. In total, she says, she spent five winters in Kensington homeless, without undergoing treatment.

Yelley describes the area as a place that is hard to escape: she compared the pavements to a surface seemingly “coated in sticky glue” and said she could not stay away, even though she knew she needed treatment. At the same time, in her videos she stresses that she is not encouraging anyone to go to Kensington, but is simply sharing her own experience.

In the end, according to Yelley, she managed to overcome her addiction and leave street life behind. She shared her story on TikTok to show how easy it is to lose your home and years of your life to drugs, and to warn others about the dangers of making a similar choice.
