Due to prolonged downpours and flooding, Bangkok has officially been declared a disaster zone in all 50 districts. Torrential rains have caused serious disruption to business operations and transport across Thailand, with more than 30 centimetres of rainfall recorded in a number of regions. The government has designated 28 and 29 September 2026 as special public holidays for the affected areas, including the capital.
Because of the persistent rain, some roads and canals remain blocked, and water has entered popular tourist sites and surrounding neighbourhoods. During a live broadcast on Facebook, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt urged residents and tourists to avoid travelling around the city unless absolutely necessary.
Despite the challenging conditions, the international airports Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) remain operational. Airlines advise passengers to allow extra time to reach the airport due to traffic jams and possible delays, and to monitor the status of their flights carefully.
Major carriers, including Thai Airways, AirAsia, Thai Vietjet, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air, have introduced flexible policies for passengers affected by the severe weather and service disruptions from late September to mid-October 2026. These include the option of a one-off free change of departure date, a travel credit, or a refund, depending on the fare conditions.
Rail services and urban commuter trains are also generally continuing to operate. The MRT Blue, Purple, Yellow and Pink metro lines are running as normal, and certain stations and facilities are being used to accommodate people affected by the flooding.
The State Railway of Thailand (State Railway of Thailand, SRT) reports normal operations on the Southern and North-Eastern routes. At the same time, additional safety measures and service adjustments have been introduced on the Eastern and Northern lines due to waterlogged tracks.
Travellers planning trips to Bangkok and other regions of Thailand are advised to check the local situation in advance, and to confirm information on flights and ground transport directly with their carriers.
