More and more TikTok users and seasoned travellers are embracing the 5-4-3-2-1 packing method, which helps cut down the number of items in a suitcase and makes getting ready for a trip easier.
The popularity of the formula surged after a video by creator Alison Lumbatis (@alisonlumbatis), who explained that when preparing for a journey it is worth following a simple rule: five tops, four interchangeable bottoms, three pairs of shoes, two outer layers and one extra item.
The idea is a kind of capsule travel wardrobe made up of versatile pieces that are easy to mix and match to create several outfits for different activities on your trip. Instead of a dozen separate ensembles, you end up with a compact selection of essential clothing in your suitcase.
Commenters are calling this approach “brilliant” and note that it is particularly useful for trips lasting from one to two weeks, provided you have access to laundry facilities. The author of the tip also recommends taking photos of your outfits in advance so that while travelling you can quickly recall how to combine the pieces.
Experts point out that the method is easier to use when the weather at your destination is more or less stable, but the formula also works in changeable conditions: it already builds in several pairs of shoes and a few options for outerwear.
