What is known about the impact of mobile phones on health

Mobile phones have become an integral part of everyday life, so many people wonder whether their use can be harmful to health. Materials from the National Center for Environmental Health summarise current scientific evidence on the possible impact of mobile phones on the human body.

At present, there is no scientific evidence that clearly confirms that using a mobile phone causes cancer or other serious diseases. Some organisations advise exercising caution, and scientists continue their research to determine whether long-term phone use may have delayed health effects.

Mobile and cordless phones operate using radiofrequency (RF) radiation, which differs from ionising radiation, such as X-rays, which are known to be harmful. For devices to be sold in the United States, they must comply with exposure limits set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). These limits are based on standards from the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) and are intended to restrict the level of RF exposure. According to the FCC, the evidence currently available does not indicate that the use of wireless devices, including mobile phones, is carcinogenic.

Despite the lack of a proven link between mobile phones and specific diseases, scientific research is ongoing. Experts are examining whether long-term phone use may influence the development of certain types of tumours, affect eye health, sleep and memory, and whether it may be associated with headaches. In particular, attention is being paid to such neoplasms as acoustic neuroma – a tumour of the nerve that connects the ear to the brain and can lead to hearing problems – and glioma, a tumour of the brain or central nervous system.

Specialists emphasise that, alongside potential risks, the benefits of mobile phones should also be taken into account: they make it possible to call for help quickly in emergencies and often save lives. At the same time, people who are concerned about the effects of RF radiation are advised to follow simple safety measures.

To reduce the level of radiofrequency radiation near the body, it is recommended to use a hands-free headset that connects directly to the phone, or to switch on the loudspeaker more often, keeping the device away from the head. In the past, RF radiation could interfere with the operation of some pacemakers, so people with such implanted devices are advised to consult their doctor, if necessary, about the safe use of a mobile phone.

Additional information on RF radiation safety and recommendations on the use of wireless devices is provided by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
