Apple has brought its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, to market. General availability began on 23 October 2026, with pre-orders opening on 16 October. Around the launch, news agencies, including Associated Press, published guidance on the proper use of foldable phones, which directly applies to Apple’s new device as well.
The iPhone Duo is positioned as a premium product: in the US, the base version with 256 GB of storage costs 1,999 dollars, with an instalment option of 83.29 dollars per month over 24 months. Configurations with more storage are priced at 2,199 dollars for 512 GB, 2,599 dollars for 1 TB and 3,199 dollars for 2 TB.
The main piece of advice in the AP article concerns the folding mechanism itself: users are advised not to bend the phone backwards and not to apply excessive force when opening or closing it. It is a reminder that the inner screen of a foldable smartphone is part of a complex mechanical system, where the panel bends along the crease line every time, and the hinge has to withstand thousands of cycles over the device’s lifetime.
Other typical recommendations for foldable devices include not pressing hard objects against the inner display and making sure that dirt or small debris does not get into the hinge area. Apple publishes detailed care instructions for the iPhone Duo in its own support documentation, but the very fact that a nationwide advisory piece appeared in the week sales began underlines the focus on the reliability of the new form factor.
The iPhone Duo is equipped with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner screen when unfolded. Inside, it runs on the Apple A20 Pro chip, and the main camera is a 48-megapixel Fusion Main module, similar to the solutions used in flagship models in recent years. According to Apple, the smartphone can play back video for up to 31 hours on the inner screen and up to 44 hours on the outer screen only, which demonstrates the higher energy consumption of the large foldable panel.
Alongside the official statements, the first independent durability tests are also appearing. One reviewer reported testing the iPhone Duo on a robotic rig, where the device went through 32,640 folding-unfolding cycles over four nights. After the test, according to the author, the hinge became slightly stiffer, but no visible display damage was found. Although this is just one example and not a statistical study, such results help shape users’ perception of the reliability of the new design.
Apple itself explicitly stresses in its marketing materials that the iPhone Duo is “durable”. At the same time, in the technical specifications the company traditionally clarifies that protection against splashes, water and dust is not permanent and may decrease as a result of normal wear. For a foldable device with a moving hinge, this caveat takes on particular significance.
The launch of the iPhone Duo comes against the backdrop of an already established market for foldable smartphones, where Samsung and other manufacturers have been present since 2019. Their years of experience with broken hinges, creased screens and dust ingress created demand for detailed care advice, which now also extends to the first foldable iPhone.
Experts note that Apple’s arrival in this segment could be a turning point for the entire category: if the iPhone Duo hinge proves itself in everyday use at scale, it will strengthen trust in foldable phones overall. If the opposite happens and reliability issues emerge, they could slow the development of the form factor for years.
Practical tips for owners of the iPhone Duo and other foldable smartphones boil down to a few simple rules:
- do not bend the device beyond its intended range of motion and do not apply excessive force to the hinge;
- handle the inner screen with care, avoiding contact with hard or sharp objects;
- keep the hinge area clean and do not rely on water and dust resistance as a permanent guarantee.
Owners of foldable models from other brands have previously received similar recommendations, but with the arrival of the iPhone Duo the audience for this advice is expanding significantly, as for the first time a foldable smartphone is being released under the iPhone brand.
