How to use Microsoft Word on an Android smartphone: key features and tips

Microsoft Word for Android makes it possible to create and edit documents without a computer. It is used by students, office workers, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs quick access to important files on the go. The mobile version supports text formatting, inserting images and tables, saving to the cloud, exporting to PDF, and Microsoft Copilot AI tools for compatible accounts.

To get started, you need to install Microsoft Word from Google Play. In the store, search for the app “Microsoft Word: Edit Documents” and make sure that Microsoft Corporation is listed as the developer. After tapping “Install”, open the app and sign in with your Microsoft account. A free account gives you access to basic tools, while advanced features are available with a Microsoft 365 subscription.

The home screen shows recent files, new documents and saved materials. The “+” button lets you create a new document, and the “Open” section helps you find files in the smartphone’s internal storage or in supported cloud services. The appearance of the menu may vary slightly depending on the version of Android and the app itself.

To create a document, tap “+” and choose “Blank document” or one of the templates, such as a CV, business letter, report or meeting notes. You can then enter text and change it using the toolbar. It is worth renaming the document straight away so it is easy to find later.

Word for Android offers familiar formatting tools: bold, italics, underline, changing the font, size and colour of text, as well as highlighting. Paragraphs can be aligned to the left, centred, aligned to the right or justified. Bulleted and numbered lists, indents and line spacing help make text structured and easy to read, which is useful for coursework, office reports and business correspondence.

Through the “Insert” tab, you can add images from your phone’s storage, create tables to organise data in rows and columns, add hyperlinks to websites or other online resources, and use shapes, symbols and text boxes for simple page layout. This way, a project report can conveniently show dates, tasks and costs in a table, a CV can include a photo (where appropriate), and a business proposal can contain links to additional materials.

The app works with the OneDrive and SharePoint cloud storages, as well as other supported services, and you can also save files locally on your phone. The AutoSave feature (if available and enabled) helps prevent the loss of recent changes. For working offline, documents stored on the device are suitable, as well as cloud files that have been downloaded in advance; as soon as a connection is available, changes are synchronised.

Exporting to PDF is a useful option. To use it, open the document, tap “Share” or the menu button and select the relevant item. The PDF format preserves the page layout, so it is convenient to send CVs, reports or formal letters in this form. Using the sharing function, you can also send a link or invite other users to view or edit the document.

Microsoft Copilot provides users with eligible accounts with artificial intelligence tools in Word. On a smartphone, Copilot can briefly summarise a document, answer questions about its contents, and in some versions help with writing and rephrasing text. In September 2026, the company expanded the use of Copilot in its productivity apps for Android, but the exact set of features depends on the type of account, the presence of a subscription and the stage of rollout.

The functionality described in the documentation for creating a brief summary and interacting with Copilot requires the appropriate work licence, so free or personal accounts may have a different set of AI features. If there is a Copilot panel in the interface, it is handy for quickly reviewing long texts and pulling out key facts without reading them in full.

There are several tips that make working with Word on Android easier. For long reports or dissertations, it is convenient to connect a Bluetooth keyboard. Built-in heading styles help keep the document structure consistent, and saving to OneDrive is a reliable backup for important files. Before sending a document, it is worth checking spelling, font size, alignment and page breaks, and exporting the final version to PDF if needed.

The mobile version of Word supports basic operations: editing text, working with tables and images, adding comments, Track Changes mode, spellcheck and word count. At the same time, advanced referencing and citation tools, more in-depth grammar checking, complex page layouts and other “desktop” capabilities are either limited or unavailable.

Overall, Microsoft Word for Android is a convenient solution for everyday documents anywhere. The mobile tools cover most typical tasks, and access to the cloud, export to PDF and Copilot support make working more flexible. For very complex projects and detailed layout, the desktop version is more appropriate, but for quick edits and routine documents, the mobile app offers a practical set of features in a single interface.
