In Drohobych, the seventh anniversary is being marked of the tragedy that occurred on the night of 28 August 2019 in a residential building on Hrushevskoho Street, 101/1. As a result of the collapse of one of the entrances of the multi-storey block, eight people were killed, including two children.
Among those who died were: Olha Baran, 44; Kateryna Horniak, 79; Stepan Mysiv, 57; Yevheniia Nyshchuk, 80; Valerii Pylyptsiv, 42; Valentyna Dzhurynska, 64; Anna Hruzdieva, 21; Davyд Stakhiv, 5. Their names are being remembered today in the Drohobych community, which preserves the memory of every life lost.
After the collapse of the building, the residents who were left homeless were provided with new accommodation. 40 million 416 thousand hryvnias from the State Reserve Fund of Ukraine were allocated for the purchase of flats. Until permanent housing was bought, 1 million 363 thousand hryvnias were allocated from Drohobych’s municipal budget to rent temporary flats for the affected families.
The families of the deceased and the injured received financial support. 1 million 667 thousand hryvnias were allocated for this purpose from the regional and municipal budgets. A further over 2 million hryvnias was provided by patrons and benefactors from various regions of Ukraine.
Despite the substantial financial resources mobilised to overcome the consequences of the tragedy, the community stresses that no amount of money can compensate for the loss of life, the shattered destinies and the plans cut short that night. In Drohobych, they remember not only those who died, but also everyone who helped the victims at the time, took part in the rescue efforts and supported the families.
The Drohobych community once again returns to this date as a painful but important page in its history, emphasising that the memory of the residents who died in the building on Hrushevskoho Street, 101/1, remains alive.
