Underground Tunnel from Austro-Hungarian Era Discovered in Stryi

During road repairs on Nezalezhnosti Street in Stryi, municipal workers accidentally stumbled upon the entrance to an underground tunnel from the Austro-Hungarian era. According to local historians, over a hundred years ago, the Mlynivka River flowed here, with even small bridges crossing it.

The Deputy Mayor, Mykhailo Zhuravchak, took an interest in the discovery and invited diggers Andriy Ryshtun and Vlad Vergaz, known for their explorations of Lviv’s underground, to Stryi. The underground Mlynivka welcomed guests after decades of tranquillity.

The diggers described their first encounter with Stryi’s underground in an article linked here. We hope that the diggers’ journeys in Stryi will continue and that we will uncover new chapters of our city’s history.
