Lviv Studies Istanbul’s Transport Experience for Rapid Transit

In mid-April, a delegation from Lviv was on a working visit to Istanbul as part of the “European Bus Rapid Transit 2030” (eBRT 2030) project. This European Commission initiative aims to assist cities in developing rapid transit systems with efficiency akin to that of the metro.

The purpose of the visit was to study the experience of organising main routes so that transport could carry large volumes of passengers according to a precise schedule. The delegation comprised leaders and representatives from Lviv’s relevant departments, as well as experts from the Public Union “Civinet Ukraine”.

During the visit, delegates familiarised themselves with the operations of IETT, responsible for bus transport, and Metro Istanbul, which manages the metro and trams. The Lviv representatives visited control centres and depots, paying attention to digital solutions that allow for swift responses to changes.

A key part of the visit was dedicated to the Metrobus system, which operates on dedicated lanes and functions as a ground metro. The local department of urban mobility in Lviv is responsible for the project’s feasibility study.

This working visit opens up new opportunities for Lviv — Oleh Zabarilo.

This experience is valuable for Lviv in the context of developing its own transport initiatives, especially in establishing a partnership with Istanbul for collaboration in the field of mobility.
