“The Lviv region and Lviv in particular have quite a long and historically stable tradition of fencing. The first fencing club in Lviv was established in 1848, and in 1894, under the Ukrainian gymnastic society Sokil, fencing sections began to function in other cities of the then Galicia. Speaking in the context of the present, the greatest success is the gold medal of our fencer Yana Shemialyina at the London Olympics. Today, we see a rapid growth of the younger generation of athletes,” adds Roman Khimyak, head of the Youth and Sports Department of the Lviv Regional Military Administration.
