The representative of Lviv region, Mariia Aleksandrova, won a historic bronze medal at the European U17 Badminton Championship.

On Sunday, December 7, the European U17 Badminton Championship concluded in Arrecife on the Spanish island of Lanzarote. The competition brought together young athletes from 38 European countries.

Lviv was represented in the Ukrainian national team by Mariia Aleksandrova, a student of Lviv’s Youth Sports School 1 and a protégé of Oksana Hrechanyuk. The athlete came from Kharkiv, where she was trained at the Kharkiv Badminton Club.

Mariia Aleksandrova, together with Sofiia Nikolaieva from Mykolaiv, took third place in the women’s doubles category. On their way to the podium, the girls defeated athletes from Germany, Estonia, and Slovakia, and secured a spot in the top four by overcoming opponents from England, who were the number one seeds. In the semifinals, they lost to the French duo, who later became the champions.

Thus, Mariia Aleksandrova brought Lviv its first bronze medal in the individual European Badminton Championship for athletes under 17. Congratulations to Mariia, her coach, her first coaches, her parents, the sports school, and the entire badminton community of Lviv region! We wish you continued success in sports!

“Badminton is one of the most accessible forms of physical activity: relatively inexpensive equipment, a small space requirement, and high intensity make it ideal for practice at any age. Due to these advantages, it ranks among the top 10 most popular sports in the world. Importantly, in Lviv region, badminton is one of the most widespread and dynamic sports within the ‘Sporting Games of Lviv Region,’ consistently attracting a large number of participants and showing growth year after year,” said Roman Khimyak, director of the Department of Sport, Youth, and Tourism of Lviv Regional State Administration.
