On March 15, Lviv will host the first charity chess tournament in memory of the Heroes of the Russian-Ukrainian War, the Memorial of Chess Warriors.
The competition will be held according to the Swiss system in 9 rounds with the calculation of the FIDE international rapid chess rating. All chess players are welcome to participate, subject to a charitable tournament fee of 400 UAH. The organizers will allocate all the proceeds of the charity contributions to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Time control: 10 minutes until the end of the game for each participant with the addition of 5 seconds for each move made, starting from the first. The first 15 games will be streamed online during the tournament.
“The event is organized to honor the memory of chess players who gave their lives defending their homeland in the Russian-Ukrainian war. Among them are Artem Sachuk, Oleksandr Hoshylyk, Mykhailo Safonov, Roman Khytrych, Serhiy Mazurov, Oleksiy Druzhynets, Andriy Melnychuk, Roman Buzinsky, Andriy Chepil, Oleksandr Brivko, Andriy Vovchenko, Heorhiy Promsky, Petro Katsan, Mykola Hapchyn (missing), Mykhailo Yarmysty (missing),” said tournament director Anton Lytvynets, associate professor of the departments of shooting and technical sports and Olympic education at the Luhansk State University of Physical Education and Sports. He added: “A person lives as long as they are remembered. Therefore, such events are aimed at reminding us of Ukrainian Heroes in the struggle for a free Motherland.”
