From now on, all students of grades 2-4 in Lviv will be able to learn swimming for free. It is about teaching swimming in school pools during the holidays to those children who study in schools without pools. The relevant decision was supported at a session of the Lviv City Council.
“Not every school in Lviv has a swimming pool. In those schools where they are available, children have the opportunity to learn how to behave in the water and how to swim. But, unfortunately, children of other schools do not have such an opportunity. Considering the fact that we have autumn, winter, spring and long summer vacations, we initiated the idea that during this period school swimming pools should be used by children from those educational institutions that do not have swimming pools. We want all our students to be able to swim, and this decision is a great opportunity to realize our intention,” says Andriy Zakaliuk, head of the Lviv Education Department.
The program of initial training of children in swimming in institutions of general secondary education of the Lviv City Territorial Community will operate throughout 2024.
Her tasks are:
• development of safety skills on the water;
• studying the basic rules of water safety and creating conditions for the development of confidence and independence of children during swimming;
• teaching basic swimming skills and ensuring effective learning of basic swimming techniques;
• mastering the vital skill of swimming;
• development of physical qualities and coordination of movements.
“This is a great initiative, thanks to which we will be able to involve as many children as possible in a healthy lifestyle. Today we are developing sports school leagues in the community. And I really hope that those students who will acquire the necessary skills thanks to this program will later participate in the school swimming league,” emphasizes Anton Nikulin, head of the Lviv sports department.
