At the age of 93, Yosyp Gula – UPA soldier, public figure, poet – passed away.

Йосипа Гулу поховають завтра на Личаківському кладовищі у Львові

UPA soldier, active public figure and poet Yosyp Gula will be buried on Tuesday, July 11, at the Lychakiv cemetery in Lviv. He died on July 8 at the age of 93.

Farewell will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the family home. Therefore, the procession will go to the church of the Great Martyr Dimitriy of the UGCC (28a Zahirna Street), where the funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. After that, the procession will go to the Lychakiv cemetery, where Yosyp Gula will be buried.

Yosyp Gula (May 7, 1931 – July 8, 2023) was born in the village of Didyliv, Lviv region.

A soldier of the Ukrainian insurgent army. At the age of 16, he took the oath and joined the ranks of the defenders of Ukraine under the pseudonym “Kruk”. In July 1948, he was wounded and arrested.

After months of torture, Yosyp Gula was sentenced to death, which was later commuted to 25 years in prison. Due to numerous protests, he served hard labor in several closed prisons, and in 1956 he was released as a “minor political prisoner.”

After returning to Lviv, he survived the persecution of the communist regime, but continued to be active in public activities. He was a talented poet, singer, member of the “Unscored” choir, studied the history of Ukraine, its culture and literature.

Together with his wife, he lived in marriage for over 63 years, raised two children, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Yosyp Gula died on July 8, 2023.
