Breast Cancer: Importance of Diagnostics in Drohobych

October reminds us of the necessity for breast cancer awareness.

This is the most common oncological disease among women, claiming the lives of over half a million women worldwide each year. In Ukraine, the situation is no better: over the past five years, the incidence has risen by 10%. As noted by the Cancer Institute, “every 7-8 woman has breast problems, but they seek medical help too late”. The initial stage of tumor development is painless and almost asymptomatic, increasing the risk of high mortality due to metastases.

Early diagnosis is key to effective treatment. With timely detection, cancer is 95% curable at stage I, 80% at stage II, and 50% at stage III. Regular self-examinations and preventive check-ups increase the chances of recovery.

In Drohobych, there is an inter-district screening center at city hospital No. 3, where professional examinations can be conducted. Women under 40 are recommended to undergo ultrasound screening, while after 40, mammography is advised. Referrals can be obtained from a family doctor or a specialized specialist.
