Student in Lviv Region Injured by Homemade Firecracker Explosion

In the Lviv region, a vocational college student was injured while trying to make a firecracker by himself. Police are establishing the circumstances of the incident.

The injured young man is now under medical supervision, with no other victims reported due to the incident. The police received information about a patient admitted to one of the hospitals in the Sambir district with characteristic injuries on June 26 at about 20:10. Doctors diagnosed the injured person with, among other things, a penetrating eye injury, traumatic partial amputation of two fingers, wounds to the face and upper limbs.

As determined by investigators and officers from other units of the Sambir district police department, on that day around 19:00, the victim – a 17-year-old resident of the Sambir district, a second-year student of one of the vocational colleges – was trying to make a firecracker on his own in a garage at his residence. During the process, the device exploded in his hands, causing bodily injuries. No other victims resulted from the incident.

In the garage where the explosion occurred, police discovered and seized chemicals, flasks, and other items that the student was using to make the firecracker.

On this fact, investigators of the territorial police unit, under the procedural guidance of the Sambir District Prosecutor’s Office, initiated criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 263-1 (“Illegal manufacture, alteration, or repair of firearms or falsification, illegal removal, or alteration of their markings, or illegal manufacturing of ammunition, explosive substances or explosive devices”) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article’s sanction provides for a penalty of imprisonment for a term of three to seven years.

Pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
