On Sunday, 9 March, Lviv marked the 212th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko — poet, artist, ethnographer, thinker and public figure, whom Ukrainians regard as a national symbol.
Representatives of the city and regional authorities, military personnel, members of civic organisations, cultural figures, as well as residents and visitors of Lviv gathered at the monument to the Kobzar on Freedom Avenue. The city council was represented at the ceremony by First Deputy Mayor Andriy Moskalenko.
Those in attendance laid flowers at the monument to Shevchenko. A combined choir performed musical works set to the verses of Taras Shevchenko.
