A new act of vandalism has been reported at the old cemetery in Sokal, where numerous gravestones were found destroyed. Locals were shocked to find both older and well-maintained newer graves damaged.
Eyewitnesses describe the destruction as massive and chaotic. In some places, older headstones were deliberately thrown onto other graves, causing further damage. Valuable materials, such as gabbro and stonework, were also smashed.
Public Outrage and Police Response

Law enforcement has launched a criminal investigation.
Local resident Oleksandra Lukach commented: “Walk around the cemetery — almost all the old monuments are down. This isn’t an isolated case; it’s large-scale destruction.”
Background: Not the First Time
This is not the first case of vandalism in this cemetery. Back in April 2016, vandals destroyed 38 tombstones in the same area. The destruction back then was also random and indiscriminate.
Residents are demanding transparency, proper investigation, and security measures like surveillance cameras — because silence only breeds impunity.
