On 24 and 25 October, a two-day hackathon will take place in Lviv, during which engineering students together with veterans and patients of the UNBROKEN centre will develop technological solutions for people who have sustained severe injuries as a result of the war. At the end of the event, the teams will present their own prototypes.
According to the organisers, participants will work on real requests from patients of the UNBROKEN centre. In particular, they will focus on technologies to help people with visual impairments orient themselves in space, as well as tools that will enable people with double upper-limb amputation to operate a smartphone without using their hands.
The hackathon is being organised by UNBROKEN, the Techiia Foundation and Esper LLC. Twenty-four students from the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, the Kyiv Aviation Institute, the Kyiv School of Economics and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv will come to Lviv. Each team will include veterans, patients of the UNBROKEN centre, as well as mentors, doctors and occupational therapists working alongside the students. The aim of this joint work is to help people who have suffered severe injuries become more independent and improve their quality of life.
The teams will have two days to work on their solutions. On Sunday they will present the prototypes they have developed, and the Techiia Foundation will consider the possibility of further implementing them. The event will take place at the UNBROKEN University at: 21 F. Rzhehorz Street.
The organisers have published the hackathon programme. On 24 October at 12:00 the opening, team introductions and task briefing are scheduled. From 12:30 to 18:00 the teams will work on their projects, and there will also be demonstrations of VR technologies and simulation trainers. In parallel, from 13:00 to 16:00, panel discussions will be held with experts in AI and development, engineers, researchers, medical professionals and veterans.
On 25 October from 10:00 to 12:00 the teams will continue working on their projects. At 12:30 a public presentation of the completed solutions will begin.
