It has been 67 years since the death of Stepan Bandera — one of the leading ideologues and leaders of the Ukrainian national liberation movement. On 15 October 1959 he was killed.
According to established facts, the killer was Bohdan Stashynsky, a native of the village of Borshchovychi in the Lviv region and an agent of the Soviet KGB. The assassination attempt on Bandera became one of the most high-profile political operations carried out by the Soviet security services against the Ukrainian liberation movement.
Stepan Bandera is remembered as an outstanding organiser and political strategist who devoted his life to the struggle for the freedom of the Ukrainian people and the creation of an independent Ukrainian state.
Despite Bandera’s physical elimination, the ideas of the struggle for Ukraine’s independence continued to live on in subsequent generations. Against the backdrop of the current war against Russian aggression, this anniversary serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving historical memory and understanding what Ukrainians have given, and continue to give, their lives for.
On this day, Ukrainians are called upon to remember all those who fought for Ukraine and to defend the freedom that has been won.
