The IX International Festival “Music in Old Lviv”, which will take place on August 15-28, will be a pleasant last chord of the Lviv artistic summer. This year, seven unique events will take place within its borders, each of which will demonstrate the multidimensionality, diversity and uniqueness of Lviv’s musical culture.
The main concept of this year’s, the ninth “Music in Old Lviv” festival in the framework of partnership with the well-known “Music in Old Krakow” festival, is to present Lviv as a city with a special architectural and historical landscape, monuments of European culture and history , traditions, interactive ideas and creative realities.
This year’s festival will take place in the conditions of a full-scale war in Ukraine. If in previous years the most active visitors to the concerts were guests of Lviv and Krakow, fans of high classics, then this year they will also be joined by forced migrants who were accepted by Krakow and Lviv, and who need consolation and support more than ever. The geography of invited musicians, whom guests will hear at concerts, will also expand significantly. In addition to Polish soloists and groups, performers from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Siversko-Donetsk, Mariupol, Ivano-Frankivsk, Luhansk and Lviv will also perform on the stages of ancient cities.
The IX International Festival “Music in Old Lviv and Krakow” will open on August 15 with the program of chamber music “Angel’s Touch” by well-known Ukrainian musicians – violinist Bohdana Pivnenko, pianist Oksana Yaremchuk and cellist and composer Zoltan Almashi. The performers brought together the best works of modern Ukrainian academic music for listeners to demonstrate how diverse and multifaceted it is.
On August 16, the Kyiv flautist Yuriy Shutko will perform a solo program in the Lyudkevich concert hall. The event will be called “The Magic of the Flute” and will reveal the musical richness of this instrument through music from different eras.
Also within the framework of the festival, on August 20, Kharkiv organist Stanislav Kalinin will present a solo program “Organ Fantasy” from the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Ferenc Liszt, as well as compositions by the contemporary Czech artist Petr Eben and the German composer and organist Siegfried Karg-Elert.
On August 21, Kyiv baritone Stanislav Badrak will present his author’s project “On Time” on the stage of the Lyudkevich concert hall. Together with the Lviv pianist Myroslav Dragan, they will perform vocal works by Mykola Lysenko, Lesya Dichno and Valentin Sylvestrov.
On August 24, on the Independence Day of Ukraine, the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Luhansk Regional Philharmonic (director – Ihor Shapovalov) will perform in the Archcathedral of St. George.
On August 26, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Krakow, Ukrainian musicians will present the well-known author’s project of the Lviv Virtuosi Academic Chamber Orchestra – “Three Mozarts”. The concert will consist entirely of the works of three Mozarts: father – Leopold, son – Wolfgang Amadeus and grandson – Franz Xaver. People’s Artist of Ukraine and Art Director of the Festival Serhii Burko and Honored Artist of Ukraine, head of the Mariupol Chamber Orchestra “Renaissance” Vasyl Kryachok will conduct.
The Ninth International Festival “Music in Old Lviv” will end on August 28 in the Lyudkevich Concert Hall of the Lviv National Philharmonic with the participation of guests from Ivano-Frankivsk – Academic Chamber Orchestra “Harmonia Mobile” (artistic director and concertmaster – Natalia Mandryka). The orchestra will offer listeners an exquisite program called “Adagio without war”, which will combine music from more than four centuries, starting with the works of baroque geniuses – Bach and Vivaldi, and ending with the works of modern composer and artist of the Ivano-Frankivsk Philharmonic, Arsen Buchynskyi.
The organizer of the festival is always the Myroslav Skoryk Lviv National Philharmonic, the artistic director is Serhiy Burko.
