Lviv Regional Children’s Library introduces sign language consultations

The municipal institution of the Lviv Regional Council “Lviv Regional Children’s Library” has introduced a new service for visitors with hearing impairments. The library now has a librarian-consultant who knows sign language and can accompany such readers during their visit.

Library staff member Anna Kyryliuk has completed a special training course entitled “Culture without Limits”. The training was organised on the initiative of the Lviv Municipal Library together with the public organisation “Opportunities for Everyone”.

The consultant helps people with hearing impairments to find their way around the building, choose books, get answers to their questions and, if needed, simply have a conversation in sign language.

“For us, this is not just a new certificate or another completed course. It is another step towards a library that is open to everyone. Because accessibility is when the doors are not only physically open. It is when you can be heard, understood and helped to find exactly what you came for,” the library noted.

The institution reminds visitors that a space for children with visual impairments has already been set up at the Lviv Regional Children’s Library, so inclusive services here are gradually being expanded.
