The Ministry of Health of Ukraine has officially approved the new name of Lviv National Medical University. From now on, the institution will bear the name “Lviv National Medical University named after King Danylo” instead of its previous name associated with Danylo of Halych.
As stated in the announcement, the Ministry of Health order on the change of name marked the final stage of the renaming process. Earlier, this decision had been backed by the University Academic Council, while the initiative itself was put forward by the Lviv Regional State Administration back in June.
The address stresses that Danylo Romanovych was a ruler of Rus and a crowned king, therefore the updated name of the university is intended to highlight his historical status and is not merely a technical adjustment, but a step towards restoring historical justice.
The authors of the initiative expressed their gratitude to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and Minister Viktor Liashko for supporting the decision, as well as to Rector Orest Chemerys, the Academic Council and the university community for approving the renaming. It is emphasised that in this way the course continues towards reclaiming Ukraine’s own history, free from imperial distortions and the downplaying of the significance of Ukrainian historical figures.
