2026 Declared the Year of Iryna Senyk in Lviv Region, with a Series of Events Planned

In Lviv region, the list of key events to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Iryna Senyk has been approved — a Ukrainian dissident, OUN liaison, poet, master of artistic embroidery, long-term political prisoner of Soviet labour camps and member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group. This was reported by the Lviv Regional Council.

By decision of the Regional Council, 2026 has been proclaimed the Year of Iryna Senyk. The central events are planned for June. In particular, on 8 June, Iryna Senyk’s birthday, a ceremonial commemoration will be held at Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv at the site of her burial.

Throughout the year in Lviv region, exhibitions, conferences, round tables, museum displays and artistic events will be organised. Particular emphasis will be placed on preserving and promoting the creative legacy of Iryna Senyk: this involves producing replicas of traditional outfits based on her embroidery patterns and issuing themed postcards inspired by her original works.

Member of the Lviv Regional Council Oreslava Khomyk highlighted the importance of embroidery in the life of Iryna Senyk: it was precisely this that became her way of preserving inner freedom during exile, in the camps and prisons, where she created miniature works now considered an important part of Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

Among the planned events are a special cancellation of a postage stamp, an exhibition at the National Museum-Memorial “Prison on Lontskoho”, literary and artistic events, and presentations about Iryna Senyk at national and international forums.

A separate programme of events has been prepared by the Boryslav community, where Iryna Senyk lived for almost 30 years after returning from exile.
