On November 1, the head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, Maksym Kozytskyi, honored the first laureates of the Andrey Sheptytskyi regional award. They were Ihor Kalynets, a poet and novelist, a representative of the “sixties”, a political prisoner, and Ihor Nabytovych, a doctor of philological sciences, a professor at Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University of Drohobytskyi.

The prize is an award for significant contributions to the development of philanthropy, entrepreneurship, statehood, culture, as well as for the creation of scientific works that have great scientific and practical value and belong to the areas that were in the area of attention of the Metropolitan: theology, art history (in terms of Ukrainian identity), local history, medicine (in terms of overcoming the negative consequences of the war), pedagogy, ecology.

The competition for the prize was held for the first time this year. According to the terms of the competition, two winners will be determined, who will each receive a monetary reward of 200,000 hryvnias. Ihor Kalynets was recognized for his significant contribution to the development of statehood and culture of Ukraine, and Ihor Nabytovych for the monograph “Saga of an artistic family: Aleksander Fredro, Sofia Sheptytska, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi.”

“The first laureates of the regional award named after Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi are worthy Ukrainians who continue the path of our national and spiritual leader.

It is symbolic that our esteemed laureates were awarded on the day when the Metropolitan left for eternity, because people are alive as long as their memory, their cause and values live.

The names of both Igors are already inscribed in the modern history of Ukraine. Thank you for your civic stance, educational activities, as well as for the fact that you deeply engrave in writing the meanings that are important for Ukrainians.

I wish you strength, health, and inspiration to continue to be models of service to Ukrainian science, the national idea, and our native people!”, Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv OVA, said during the awarding ceremony of the winners.

The award was initiated by the Department of Education and Science of the Lviv Oblast. As the director of the department Oleg Paska noted earlier, one of the authors of the introduction of the award named after the Metropolitan was the former Minister of Education, Hero of Ukraine Ivan Vakarchuk.

The purpose of the award competition is to draw society’s attention to one of the most prominent national and spiritual leaders of Ukraine, Metropolitan Andrey, Count Sheptytskyi, and his activities.
