In the Lviv region, the memory of the Great Stonemason Ivan Franko was commemorated

Today is the 167th anniversary of the birth of the genius of the Ukrainian nation, Ivan Franko.

On this occasion, the memory of an outstanding writer, poet, publicist, translator, scientist, public and political figure was commemorated in Lviv Oblast.

During the event, representatives of the authorities, the public, students and schoolchildren laid flowers at the monument to Ivan Franko on the square in front of the Lviv National University, named after the Great Stonemason.

“Ivan Franko is known to us as a fighter who lived his life with a sense of duty to his people. Known to us as a genius of words, the author of incredible poetry and prose. Today, we not only honor the memory of the artist, but also remind Ukrainians once again about our incredible writers, who in their works nurtured love for their land, a sense of pride for their nation”, – emphasized the deputy head of Lviv OVA Ivan Sobko.

Ivan Yakovych Franko is an outstanding Ukrainian writer, poet, translator, publicist and public and political figure. He was born on August 27, 1856 in the Carpathian village of Naguyevychy, Drohobytsky District, Lviv Region.

He began to write his first poems while studying at the gymnasium. For example, he dedicated the poem “Easter” (unfortunately not preserved to this day) to his late father. After high school, he entered the philosophy faculty of Lviv University.

For social and political activities, which were classified as socialist propaganda, Franko was imprisoned 4 times by the Austrian authorities. As a result of the first arrest, he was forced to interrupt his studies at the university, but later resumed it.

In 1890, he became one of the founders and the first chairman of the Russian-Ukrainian Radical Party (RURP). Three years later, Franko brilliantly defended his thesis at the University of Vienna and obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

1899 Franko left the RURP and joined the Ukrainian National Democratic Party. With the support of Mykhailo Hrushevsky, he became an active member of the Scientific Society named after Shevchenko (NTSh), therefore withdrew from active political activity and devoted himself to literary and scientific work.

He was married to Olga Khoruzhynska, with whom he raised four children – three sons (Andriy, Taras, Petro) and a daughter (Anna).

The last decade of Frank’s life was spent mainly in solitude and physical and psychological torment. Starting from 1908, Franko suffered from a severe psychophysiological illness, as a result of which he had deformed and paralyzed hands. This greatly hindered his productive literary and scientific work, which, however, he did not stop until his death.

Ivan Franko died on May 28, 1916. Buried at the Lychakiv cemetery. Nominated for the Nobel Prize.
