On 6 August 2026, a commemorative event was held in the Belz community dedicated to the tragic fate of the village of Bezuiv, which once lay near Murovane and was destroyed during wartime events. At the site of the former village, community residents, clergy, representatives of the local authorities and young people gathered.
The memorial service for the residents of Bezuiv who were killed was conducted by Fr Ihor Hrytsa. After the prayer, participants in the event took part in a patriotic gathering, during which words of gratitude were voiced to those who gave their lives for Ukraine’s freedom, as well as appeals to preserve historical memory and pass it on to future generations.
The secretary of Belz City Council, Halyna Shurma, addressed those present. She stressed that understanding the tragic pages of the past is important for realising the price Ukrainians have paid and continue to pay for the right to live in a free and independent state.
The patriotic atmosphere of the event was supported by performances from the amateur ensemble of the People’s House in the village of Murovane, “Malvy”, pupils of the Murovane Gymnasium and the amateur ensemble “Uhnivchanka”.
A particularly moving moment came with the recollections of a resident of Bezuiv, the founder of the chapel in Bezuiv and of the grave of the fighters for Ukraine’s freedom, Hanna Shliuz-Romanchuk, who turns 92 this year. She spoke about the day her native village was burned down, sharing personal experiences that became a living testimony to events not recorded in textbooks, but vital for preservation in the collective memory.
Participants in the event stressed that the history of Bezuiv and its residents must remain a reminder of the value of peace, freedom and Ukraine’s independence. The memory of the destroyed village is seen as part of a shared responsibility to those who died and to future generations, so that such tragedies are not repeated.
