Busk marks the 108th anniversary of the proclamation of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic

1 November marks 108 years since the proclamation of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic — an event that became an important stage in the formation of Ukrainian statehood.

On the night of 1 November 1918, Ukrainian military units took power in Lviv. By 13 November the name of the new state had been officially approved and its provisional basic law adopted. In this way Ukrainians once again asserted their right to their own state, to freedom and to determining their future independently.

One of the key figures of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic was Yevhen Petrushevych — a statesman and politician, President of the WUPR, who was born in Busk. For the town this page of history has special significance, as Busk is the birthplace of a man whose name is closely associated with the struggle for Ukrainian statehood.

Residents of the region are reminded of the importance of preserving historical memory, honouring the founders of the Ukrainian state and continuing the aspiration to independence.
