On Sunday, 17 November, the 85th theatre season officially began in Drohobych. The Lviv Academic Regional Music and Drama Theatre named after Yuriy Drohobych presented the premiere of Mavra, based on Olga Kobylianska’s story On Sunday Morning I Dug a Potion, directed by Iryna Sukhomyatnikova and Vlad Sorokin. The performance fascinated the audience with deep emotions and sophisticated stage art.

The event began with a welcoming speech by the theatre’s director, artistic director, Honoured Artist of Ukraine Mykola Hnatenko, who told the audience about preparations for the new season and the newest addition to the theatre’s acting family.

During the summer and autumn period, the theatre’s actors traditionally toured extensively and supported the soldiers: they cooked home-cooked food and smoked meats for the defenders, which they sent to the frontline. In addition, they travelled around the cities of Ukraine and abroad, where they proudly carried Ukrainian theatre art and demonstrated its high level.

Afterwards, the Mayor Taras Kuchma made a welcoming speech, thanking the entire theatre staff for the development of theatre art and volunteering and presenting a letter of thanks from the Ivan Franko International Foundation.

Thus, the audience was able to plunge into the world of deep feelings and experiences together with the premiere of The Moor. A young Gypsy woman, Mavra, was excommunicated from the camp for adultery without the hope of seeing her son, who was given into the care of childless rich people without her knowledge. Twenty years later, young Hryts, as a consequence of his mother’s sin, also gets entangled in the net of love and cannot divide his soul in half between two girls, which ultimately leads to a tragic outcome. The stage performance, enhanced by imaginative plasticity, music and scenography, depicts Mavra’s circle of guilt and redemption and prompts reflections on a person’s responsibility for their actions and their impact on their own life and the fate of their loved ones.
