Historic gateway on Turetska Street restored in Lviv

In Lviv, the restoration of a historic wooden gateway in the building at 1 Turetska Street has been completed. Before specialists intervened, it was in a neglected state, with losses of the original decorative elements and damage to the wooden structures.

LKP “Heritage Bureau” explained that the metal grilles and a significant part of the applied decorative features had disappeared from the gateway; there was no glazing, no weather bar and no latch on the door leaf. The timber required substantial restoration, and the gateway structure and the door itself had partly lost their proper geometry. An additional challenge was posed by numerous layers of paint, including a thick red coat, applied over the previous decades.

During the works, restorers carefully removed all the paint layers, cleaned the wooden surfaces and prepared them for restoration. They then carried out comprehensive conservation: they corrected the geometry of the gateway and the door leaf, restored surviving elements and made new decorative overlays to replace those that had been lost. Some details had to be recreated from drawings prepared by the architect of LKP “Heritage Bureau” – in particular the weather bar and the metal grille – and a new latch was also installed.

A separate stage of the works concerned the glazing, which had been completely lost by the time restoration began. New glass was mounted in an opening frame, allowing it to be opened and the glass to be maintained from both sides. In addition, a new metal threshold was installed. As noted by LKP “Heritage Bureau”, the result has been not only an improvement in the technical condition of the gateway, but also the reinstatement of its lost details and its coherent historic appearance.

The total cost of the restoration came to 145 000 грн. Of this, residents contributed 43 500 грн, while 101 500 грн was financed under the “Art Nouveau as a New EUtopia” programme.

In Lviv, a municipal co-financing programme for the restoration of doors and windows in buildings within the historic area runs until 2029. Residents can take part in it via LKP “Heritage Bureau”.

In 2025, nine gateways in the historic part of the city were restored in cooperation with residents, at the following addresses: 20 Hrushevskoho Street, 12 Ostrianytsi Street, 16 Levytskoho Street, 3 Franka Street, 5 Voronoho Street, 44 Sheptytskykh Street, 25 Kubiovicha Street, 11 Drukarska Street and 29 Konovaltsia Street. Ten windows and balcony doors were also refurbished at five addresses, and six plastic windows with balcony units were replaced with wooden ones at three locations within the historic area.
