From 10 October to 8 November, the exhibition “echo returning sensing echo” will run at the City Museum on Rynok Square, 1 in Lviv. It is dedicated to the continuity of Ukrainian sound culture despite censorship, bans and threats from the Russian and Soviet empires.
The project has been prepared by the LKP “Lviv Radio” together with the City Museum, the tourism office and the Department of Culture of the Lviv City Council. Visitors will see works by contemporary Ukrainian artists, including Anton Malynovskyi, Ostap Manulyak, Kostia Vidmotai and Yurii Bulka, as well as archival documents, audio testimonies and materials from the Lviv Radio sound library.
The central idea of the exhibition is “echo” as a metaphor for transmitting cultural experience between generations. The organisers seek to trace the connection between Ukrainian cultural resistance during the Russian and Soviet empires and the present day, when some artists are involved in the defence of Ukraine.
The exhibition will open with the sound installation “Resonances” by Anton Malynovskyi and Ostap Manulyak. It is based on a reappraisal of the first recordings of Ukrainian music – in particular, works by Vasyl Barvinsky performed by Maria Krushelnytska, and recordings of kobzars made by the ethnographer Filaret Kolessa.
A separate section of the exhibition will feature archival materials: scanned tape with recordings of foreign avant-garde music that was never included in the official catalogue at the time, as well as a copy of the list of Lviv Radio recordings that were subject to seizure and destruction.
During the exhibition, public events are planned focusing on counterculture and forms of resistance in the Soviet period, as well as curator-led tours. Admission to the exhibition is free, but advance registration is required at tourist information centres or at the City Museum reception.
