On Saturday, 29 August, the Day of Remembrance of Fallen Defenders of Ukraine, the nationwide charity campaign “Sunflower of Remembrance 2026” will take place in Lviv. The initiative is being led for the second time by the Lviv Memorial Museum of Dignity.
This year, the campaign has gone beyond Lviv and now covers the whole country: dozens of flower shops, cafés, bookshops and cultural venues in Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipro and other cities have joined the fundraising effort.
The aim of the initiative is summed up in the slogan “By honouring the fallen, we help the living”. Participants are invited to purchase a sunflower for a donation starting from 100 UAH at partner venues. All funds raised will be directed towards systematic rehabilitation of service personnel, support for their families, and for the families of fallen Heroes under the care of the Patronage Service “Angels of the Third” (3rd Army Corps).
The organisers remind us that 29 August is the day when the memory of all Ukrainian fighters is honoured, including those who were killed while withdrawing from Ilovaisk in 2014. At that time, more than 300 Ukrainian soldiers were killed as they tried to break out of encirclement through sunflower fields, which have since become a symbol of this tragedy and of the struggle.
“Remembrance is not only about mourning – it must be living and active. By buying a sunflower in your city, you are not only paying tribute to the fallen Heroes, but also helping those who are fighting right now to recover and return to life,” the organisers note.
