In Lviv, restorers give practical advice to building managers on restoring monuments

The second cycle of training for building managers, representatives of utility companies and condominiums on the preservation of cultural heritage has begun in Lviv.

Now, the training also includes restoration specialists who share practical recommendations for repairs, including walls, carpentry, and forged elements, using a specific building as an example. The first meeting in this format took place yesterday, March 14, in the Halytskyi district of the city.

“How can residents repair a stairwell if the house is a landmark? As part of the #DEMEZA project, we are starting a spring period of important meetings.

Yesterday, together with representatives of the Halytskyi district municipal utility company, restoration specialists, and the management of the Department of Historic Environment Protection, we discussed the importance of complying with the requirements of the Procedure for the maintenance of facades of buildings and structures in the historic area (and beyond). They also reviewed methodological recommendations for repair work, in particular walls, carpentry, and forged elements,” said the Heritage Bureau of the Lviv City Council’s Department of Historic Environment Protection.

According to the organizers, the meeting discussed recommendations for preserving the authenticity of walls, carpentry, and forged elements on the example of a house in the historic center of Lviv at 25 Virmenska Street.

“We invited a carpentry restorer Oleksandr Savchuk, a metal restorer Yurii Mykolaiyshyn, and a mural restorer Iryna Hirna to these meetings. Oleksandr and Yurii received professional training as part of a project with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and are cooperating with us under the Co-financing Program. And we have repeatedly involved Iryna in our workshops and other activities,” the Heritage Bureau told us.

Similar meetings will be held in other districts of Lviv.

Earlier, a series of trainings on the preservation of cultural heritage for building managers, representatives of utilities and condominiums was conducted by employees of the Department of Historic Environment Protection and the Heritage Bureau. They talked about, among other things, the procedure for maintaining the facades of monuments and buildings located in the historic area of Lviv; responsibility for the condition of a building or individual architectural elements that pose a threat to human safety. Also, about opportunities for owners of monuments within the framework of co-financing programs for the restoration of historic windows, gates, and balconies in buildings that are cultural heritage sites.

By the way, residents are reminded that before carrying out work on architectural monuments and valuable buildings, they should contact the Lviv City Council’s Department of Historic Environment Protection (20 Valova St.). Employees consult every Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 to 16:00 (lunch break from 12:00 to 13:00), tel: +38 (032) 235-43-40, +38 (032) 297-55-69.

“If you are conscious residents who value cultural heritage and need to find a restorer, we recommend looking for one in the online catalog “Heritage Operators” by selecting the desired category,” the Heritage Bureau emphasized.
