In Lviv, a Historical Gate with Floral Decor Restored

In Lviv, the restoration of a metal Art Nouveau gate with floral decor on Olena Stepanivna Street, 6, has been completed. This project became part of the city’s co-financing programme for the restoration of valuable elements in historic buildings, where residents paid 30% of the cost of the work.

During the restoration, many decorative elements of the door were uncovered and returned to their place. Particularly impressive is the fragment of the olive metal gate, adorned with three golden wrought flowers at the top and a stylised leaf matching the frame at the bottom.

“During the restoration, many hidden details were revealed. Due to the extremely thick layers of paint, parts of the decorative elements remained invisible for a long time — particularly certain overlays, the existence of which was previously hard to guess. Similarly, only during the work did restorer Yuriy Mykolayishyn discover that the floral elements of the gate were made of brass, as they were also completely painted over,” said the LKP “Heritage Bureau”.

The total cost of the restoration was 126,006 UAH, of which the residents’ contribution amounted to 37,801 UAH. The remaining 88,204 UAH was funded by the “Art Nouveau as a New EUtopia” programme.

It is worth noting that until 2029, Lviv has a Co-financing Programme for the restoration of doors and windows in the historic area of the city. You can find out how to participate in the programme on the Heritage Bureau’s website in the “Co-financing” section.
