In Lviv, restoration has been completed on a wooden Secession-style gateway in the building at 5 Kotsiubynskoho Street. The entrance group is distinguished by metal decoration unusual for the city – a plant motif featuring chestnut leaves and fruit.
The work was carried out under the municipal co-financing programme for the restoration of valuable elements of historic buildings: residents paid 30% of the cost, with the remainder covered by the international project “Art Nouveau as a New EUtopia”.
According to LKP “Heritage Bureau”, before the work began the gateway was in a neglected condition. The opening frames with glass had been lost, some of the glazing had been replaced with metal sheeting, and losses to the metal grille amounted to around 30%. The lower part of the stop bead and some of the decorative wooden overlays were also damaged, and due to unprofessional installation of a code lock, the post of the left-hand door leaf had suffered significant damage. In addition, the gateway had multiple layers of poor-quality coating, an inappropriate latch, and a metal spring was used instead of a door closer.
During the restoration, the missing elements of the wrought grille were recreated based on the architect’s drawings, and the damaged stop bead and decorative overlays in the lower part of the door leaves were restored. The work was carried out by restorer Yaroslav Pashchak. As the craftsman also works with stone, the residents additionally commissioned him to restore the sandstone entrance step.
The total cost of the restoration came to 135 277 UAH. The residents’ contribution amounted to 40 583 UAH, and 94 694 UAH was financed under the international programme “Art Nouveau as a New EUtopia”.
Lviv has a Co-financing Programme for the restoration of doors and windows in buildings within the historic area. Information on the conditions of participation and how to apply is available on the LKP “Heritage Bureau” website in the “Co-financing” section.
According to the municipal programme, in 2025, in the historic part of Lviv, nine gateways were restored in cooperation with residents at the following addresses: 20 M. Hrushevskoho Street; 12 Ya. Ostrianytsi Street; 16 K. Levytskoho Street; 3 I. Franka Street; 5 M. Voronoho Street; 44 Mytropolyta Sheptytskykh Street; 25 V. Kubiiovycha Street; 11 Drukarska Street and 29 Ye. Konovaltsia Street. Ten windows and balcony doors were also restored at five addresses, and six plastic windows with balcony units were replaced with wooden ones at three addresses.
