A Memorial Plaque for Ivan Verkhratsky to be Installed in Lviv

A memorial plaque in honour of the naturalist and writer Ivan Verkhratsky will be unveiled in Lviv at 8 I. Verkhratsky Street. This installation was approved at the executive committee meeting of the Lviv City Council on 24 April.

The project, aimed at honouring Ivan Verkhratsky as a naturalist, linguist, educator, writer, translator, ethnographer, and public figure, has been developed by the city’s Office for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. The Lychakiv District Administration will be responsible for the production and installation of the plaque, while the Department of Architecture and Spatial Development will oversee the approval process.

Ivan Verkhratsky was born in 1846 in the Ternopil region and became a recognised expert in various scientific fields. He was a full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and the first head of its mathematical-natural-medical section. His butterfly collection, comprising over five thousand specimens, was donated to the scientific society’s museum.

Ivan Verkhratsky passed away on 29 November 1919 and is buried in the Lychakiv Cemetery.
