At the corner of Kostia Levytskoho Street and Yuliana Romanchuka Street in Lviv, a commemorative information plaque will appear in honour of the Ukrainian historian, statesman and public figure, literary scholar and publicist Mykhailo Hrushevsky. The installation of the plaque was approved at a meeting of the executive committee of the Lviv City Council.
The commemorative sign will be placed on the facade of the building at 1 Yuliana Romanchuka Street, on the side facing Kostia Levytskoho Street. The plaque will provide information about the life and work of Mykhailo Hrushevsky in Lviv.
Mykhailo Hrushevsky was a Ukrainian historian, public and political figure, and head of the Ukrainian Central Rada of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1917–1918. For many years he headed the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv (1897–1913), held the chair of history at Lviv University in 1894–1914, and was the author of more than 2,000 scholarly works.
In 1894 Hrushevsky moved from Kyiv to Lviv, where he was appointed ordinary professor at the Department of World History at Lviv University. In the city he worked actively in the Shevchenko Scientific Society, with which he had been collaborating since 1892: he headed the historical and philosophical section of the SSS, and also established and led the Society’s Archaeographic Commission in 1896–1913.
The scholar edited the “Notes of the Shevchenko Scientific Society”; thanks to his organisational work, more than 100 volumes of this academic publication were issued. In Lviv, Mykhailo Hrushevsky met Ivan Franko, and together they helped draw international attention to Ukrainian scholarship and Ukrainian studies.
