In Zhovkva, following the completion of comprehensive restoration works, the first festive service and Divine Liturgy were held in the Church of the Holy Trinity. The church is an 18th-century architectural monument and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Restoration works had been under way since 2019. During this time, specialists renewed the roof, reinforced the building’s load-bearing structures, restored the wall paintings, as well as the unique Baroque iconostasis of the Zhovkva school.
Around UAH 12 million was allocated for the comprehensive restoration of the shrine. Funding and organisation of the works were jointly provided by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, the B. G. Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery, the Polish institute “Polonika” and Ukrainian restorers.
During the celebrations, Yurii Buchko, Deputy Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration, presented awards to the specialists who had made a significant contribution to the preservation of the church.
Maksym Kozytskyi, Head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, emphasised the importance of the church’s restoration for Ukraine’s cultural heritage.
“After six years of restoration, the Church of the Holy Trinity has once again opened its doors to the faithful. It was built in 1720. It preserves a unique Baroque iconostasis of the Zhovkva school. The church itself has long been a symbol not only of Zhovkva, but of the entire tradition of Ukrainian wooden sacred architecture. I am grateful to the professionals who have restored this shrine’s beauty and authenticity. A people who preserve their history and culture will always have something to rely on,” said Maksym Kozytskyi
Today, the church forms part of the Zhovkva Castle museum-reserve and remains one of the most valuable sacred monuments in the Lviv region.
