The Lviv Regional Council has adopted a decision to proclaim 2027 the Year of Roman Shukhevych, the Year of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and the Year of Oleh Olzhych. The relevant decisions were supported by councillors on 20 October during the fourth plenary meeting of the XXVIII extraordinary session.
As explained by Sviatoslav Sheremeta, Chair of the Standing Committee on Culture, Information Policy and Promotion of the Lviv Regional Council, this decision will make it possible to prepare in advance a programme to mark the anniversary dates.
“It is very important for us to vote for these years, as this will make it possible as early as next year to prepare large-scale events to commemorate the respective occasions. At one time we proclaimed 2022 the Year of the UPA, we planned many events, but because of the full-scale war a significant part of them could not be implemented. This is our history, our heroes, and we must duly honour their memory. I thank the councillors for their support”
The Year of Roman Shukhevych in the Lviv region has been declared to mark the 120th anniversary of the birth of the prominent Ukrainian statesman, military and political figure, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
By a separate decision, 2027 has been proclaimed the Year of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. This initiative is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the founding of the UPA.
Councillors also supported a decision to proclaim 2027 the Year of Oleh Olzhych. It has been established to mark the 120th anniversary of the birth of the Ukrainian statesman, public, political and cultural figure.
Over the course of the coming year, in the Lviv region it is planned to develop and hold a series of memorial, academic, cultural and artistic, educational and information events dedicated to Roman Shukhevych, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and Oleh Olzhych.
