The Lviv Regional Council has appealed to the President to award the title of Hero of Ukraine to Iryna Farion.
On September 30, at the second plenary session of the XXVII extraordinary session, deputies supported the request to the President of Ukraine. They petitioned for the posthumous awarding of the Hero of Ukraine title to Iryna Farion, who tragically died on July 19, 2024. Iryna Farion was a Doctor of Philology, a professor at the Lviv Polytechnic National University, and a former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Lviv Regional Council.
The appeal highlights her many years of work in Ukrainian studies, scientific achievements, and active educational and socio-political activities. She directed her efforts towards the protection of the Ukrainian language and identity. Over 25,000 citizens signed a petition to award her the highest state honor.
“Iryna Farion waged a systematic and targeted struggle against the Russification of the Ukrainian space and sought the enforcement of existing Ukrainian laws. Her numerous awards attest to this. For over 20 years, Iryna Farion systematically and consistently defended the state language and identity of the Ukrainian people, which contributed to strengthening Ukraine’s national security and the position of our state as an independent entity on the political map of the world among other nations,” states the appeal.
The deputies called on the President of Ukraine to posthumously honor Iryna Farion with the title of Hero of Ukraine for her many years of diligent work, significant contribution to the development of science and education, and tireless ideological struggle during the hybrid aggression against Ukraine.
