Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi has appealed to the leader of the European Solidarity party, Petro Poroshenko, urging him to influence his party’s deputies in the Lviv District Council ahead of a vote on amendments to the master plan for the village of Sokolnyky. The decision in question could pave the way for large-scale residential development next to Danylo Halytskyi Lviv International Airport.
According to the appeal, on 29 September the Lviv District Council plans to consider an item concerning the expansion of the boundaries and amendments to the Sokolnyky master plan. The project envisages the possibility of dense residential development right up against the airport’s airfield.
Sadovyi stressed that the European Solidarity faction is the largest in the Lviv District Council, so the outcome of the vote will largely depend on its position. The mayor believes that transferring land near the airport for high-rise development could jeopardise the future growth of this strategic infrastructure.
“The airport is strategic infrastructure for the state. After the war ends, Ukraine will need a strong international airport, a cargo hub and the ability to develop the aviation infrastructure of the Lviv region. If we hand over this land for tower blocks today, we won’t be able to get it back tomorrow. That is why I ask you to intervene personally in this situation and prevent a decision that could threaten the interests of the state and deprive Lviv and the entire west of Ukraine of the opportunity to develop our airport” — Andriy Sadovyi
In his appeal, the mayor stressed that this is not about party competition, but about a long-term vision for the development of the country and the region after the war ends.
It was previously reported that the plans for large-scale development in Sokolnyky near Lviv airport should be considered at the level of the government and the State Service of Ukraine for Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre (Derzhheokadastr). The new village master plan provides for more than 50 hectares of residential development, designed for approximately 14,000 residents, in the immediate vicinity of the airport.
