USD 18,000 for smuggling of persons liable for military service across the border – Lviv detains organisers of the scheme, including a law enforcement officer
Under the procedural supervision of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a police officer of the Patrol Police Office in Lviv Region of the Patrol Police Department and a local resident were served a notice of suspicion. They are charged with organising the illegal transfer of persons across the state border of Ukraine (Part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
According to the investigation, the suspects set up a scheme to illegally transport men liable for military service abroad.
In return for USD 18,000, the men promised to provide a package of documents for unimpeded crossing of the state border of Ukraine. The documents in question were for a person liable for military service to work as a substitute bus driver.
One of the guarantees of successful border crossing was payment in instalments. The person liable for military service paid part of the agreed amount as an advance, and the other part after crossing the state border.
The Lviv resident was detained in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine on receiving USD 10,000.
At the request of the prosecution, the court imposed on the suspect a custodial measure of restraint with the possibility of bail.
The court also removed the law enforcement officer from his position.
The pre-trial investigation is being carried out by investigators of the territorial department of the State Bureau of Investigation, based on the materials of the SBU Office in Lviv region.
Note: In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person shall be presumed innocent of committing a crime and shall not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proved by law and established by a court verdict of guilty.
