An 18-year-old from Zakarpattia has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for robbing and assaulting a man with a disability in Khodoriv. Prosecutors from the Stryi District Prosecutor’s Office proved his guilt in the robbery of a resident of Ivano-Frankivsk region.
According to the case file, late in June this year, at night in Khodoriv, the convicted man together with his elder brother noticed a 51-year-old man with a disability in the station building, struck up a conversation with him and later went outside. Having moved to a quiet spot with few people around, the attackers beat their new acquaintance and took his bag.
From the bag they took all the money — 1,760 UAH — and fled, leaving the victim lying near the railway track. After some time the man managed to reach the nearest house and ask for help. The medics who arrived in response to the call took him to hospital, and hospital staff reported the incident to the police.
As a result of the beating, the man from Prykarpattia sustained numerous bruises and scratches to his head and body, as well as haemorrhages in the whites of both eyes. Law enforcement officers identified those involved in the attack; one of them was tracked down and brought before the court. Less than four months after the crime was committed, the man was convicted, while his brother is on the wanted list.
The court classified the defendant’s actions as robbery committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy under martial law (Part 4 of Article 186 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Until the verdict comes into legal force, the convicted man will remain in custody. The pre-trial investigation was carried out by the Stryi District Police Department of the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv region. The verdict comes into legal force after the expiry of the time limit for appeal.
