Prosecutors from the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office successfully upheld the initial court verdict in an appeal concerning a fatal road accident involving a 39-year-old resident of Pustomyty.
The man was found guilty of violating traffic safety rules that led to the death of a person (Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). He was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison, along with a 2-year driving ban.
The fatal incident occurred in April 2019 at a signal-controlled intersection in Lviv. While making a left turn, the driver of a “Daewoo Lanos” failed to yield to an oncoming “BMW-730D” traveling in the middle lane. As a result of the collision, a passenger in the Daewoo Lanos sustained serious injuries and died at the scene.
The convict’s lawyer filed an appeal seeking a suspended sentence, but the appellate court sided with the prosecution and rejected the request, leaving the original sentence unchanged.
The prosecution emphasized that this outcome demonstrates a firm stance on ensuring accountability for road violations that result in loss of life.
