Director of a company sentenced to 7 years in prison for misappropriation of budget funds during restoration of St George’s Cathedral
Following a public prosecution by prosecutors of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the director of a Lviv company was found guilty of misappropriation of another’s property by abuse of office (Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
He was sentenced to 7 years in prison with confiscation of all his property. He is also banned from engaging in business activities in the field of construction, reconstruction and other works commissioned by state bodies or local self-government for a period of 3 years.
Prosecutors proved in court that, following the results of the tender, the company headed by the defendant entered into an agreement for restoration work. Under the terms of the contract, the company undertook to improve the area around St George’s Cathedral. The complex of St George’s Cathedral is an architectural monument of national importance of the XVII century.
The director of the company, using his official position, seized funds in the form of a part of the cost of services for work and materials used. He issued deliberately forged official documents, which served as the basis for the final settlements between the parties. In particular, in the documents, he overstated the volume and cost of construction work performed. At the same time, some works were not carried out and construction materials were not used at all or partially.
As a result of these actions, the budget suffered more than UAH 2 million in losses.
The pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of the Investigation Department of the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv Region, with operational support provided by the SBU Office in Lviv Region.
The court verdict will come into force after the expiration of the appeal period.
