70-year-old Lviv resident sold sham marriage for 200,000 UAH to help conscript avoid mobilization

In Lviv, police charged a 70-year-old man who arranged a sham marriage between his daughter and a conscript, enabling the latter to avoid mobilization during martial law.

According to investigators, the suspect’s daughter has a Group II disability and was especially vulnerable due to illness and financial hardship. In 2023, motivated by profit, her father coerced her into agreeing to the fake marriage.

  • The “client” first divorced his legal wife.

  • He paid 200,000 UAH to the organizer for arranging the sham marriage.

  • This marriage granted the conscript a deferment from mobilization under martial law.

  • The scheme was uncovered by officers of the Migration Police Department of Lviv Region in cooperation with investigators from Police Department No.1 of Lviv District Police Department No.2.

  • The case is being prosecuted under the supervision of the Frankivsk District Prosecutor’s Office.

The man has been charged under Part 1 of Article 149 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (human trafficking), which carries a penalty of three to eight years in prison.

A pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
