In the Yavoriv region, the parents of a two-year-old boy, who died due to their failure to fulfil caregiving duties, are to stand trial. On 9 February, hospital staff informed the police when the child died in intensive care during medical treatment.
The death was caused by an acute infectious disease, which was accompanied by chronic malnutrition, severe anaemia, and acute alcohol intoxication. Ethanol was detected in the boy’s blood. The boy was raised in a large family under social services’ supervision.
The investigation established that the father and mother failed to provide adequate living conditions, nutrition, and medical care for their five children. The pre-trial investigation is complete, and the indictment has been forwarded to the court. The parents face up to five years’ imprisonment under Article 166 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
According to a decision by the executive committee of the territorial community, the children have been placed in a specialised children’s institution.
