14-Year-Old Girl Killed and Another Hospitalized After Renault Crash in Lviv Region

A fatal road accident occurred in the village of Butyny in the Sheptytskyi district of Ukraine’s Lviv region, killing a 14-year-old girl and leaving another teenager of the same age injured. Police detained the 50-year-old driver of a Renault and opened criminal proceedings.

Crash occurred on the evening of September 19

According to law enforcement officials, the road accident happened at approximately 8:20 p.m. on September 19 in the village of Butyny, Sheptytskyi district.

Preliminary findings indicate that a 50-year-old man was driving a Renault through the settlement when the vehicle struck two 14-year-old girls.

The Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said the teenagers were walking along the edge of the roadway in the same direction as the vehicle.

One teenager died at the scene

Both girls sustained injuries in the collision. One of the 14-year-olds suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The second 14-year-old victim was taken to a medical facility with bodily injuries. Doctors are continuing to establish her exact diagnosis.

According to preliminary information released by prosecutors, the Renault driver was sober at the time of the accident.

50-year-old Renault driver detained

Following the crash, police detained the driver under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

Investigators from the unit responsible for criminal proceedings involving children within the Lviv regional police investigation department worked at the scene together with officers from Police Department No. 2 of the Sheptytskyi District Police Department and other specialized services.

Law enforcement officers are conducting investigative procedures and establishing all circumstances that preceded the collision involving the two minors.

Criminal investigation launched

Investigators opened criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which concerns violations of road safety rules resulting in the death of a victim.

The article provides for:

  • imprisonment for a term of three to eight years;
  • possible deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for up to three years, or imprisonment without such an additional restriction.

The Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office is providing procedural supervision in the case. The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the Investigation Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Lviv region.

Investigators are working to establish the full circumstances of the fatal crash and determine how the Renault struck the two 14-year-old girls in the village of Butyny.
